The number of publications an applicant has at time of fellowship application is a poor predictor of who publishes in the long term.

These findings do not validate the practice of using application publications as a tool for selecting fellows. The question of what makes a successful dermatology hospitalist has risen to the forefront due to the rapidly increasing number of these providers. Inpatient dermatology fellowships have formed as a direct consequence. Though mostly in their infancy, these programs have primary or secondary goals to train providers in the dermatologic care of the hospitalized patient. This article presents a brief synopsis of the history of traditional hospitalist fellowships and extrapolates these findings to existing hospitalist dermatology fellowships.

Control and experimental groups were used to compare differences in scores on the California Critical Thinking Disposition Inventory CCTDI of RNs at three points during a fellowship program : baseline, week 7, and month 5.

The control group consisted of RNs who received no education in critical thinking. The experimental group received education in critical thinking using simulated scenarios and reflective journaling. CCTDI scores examined with analysis of variance showed no significant difference within groups over time or between groups.

The baseline scores of the experimental group were slightly higher than those of the control group. Chi-square analysis of demographic variables between the two groups showed no significant differences. Critical thinking dispositions are a combination of attitudes, values, and beliefs that make up one’s personality based on life experience.

Lack of statistical significance using a quantitative approach did not capture the development of the critical thinking dispositions of participants.

A secondary qualitative analysis of journal entries is being conducted. A program of summer faculty fellowships for engineering and science educators is described. The health care system reform in the People’s Republic of China has brought plans for establishment of a universal coverage for basic health services, including services for children. This effort demands significant change in health care planning. Pediatric emergency medicine PEM is not currently identified as a specialty in China, and emergency medicine systems suffer from lack of appropriate training.

The main objective was to upgrade the professional and clinical experience of emergency physicians practicing PEM and build PEM capacity throughout China by training the future trainers. After selecting trainees, the program included a structured curriculum over 2 years of training in China by Canadian and Australian PEM faculty and then practical exposure to PEM in Canada.

All trainees underwent a structured evaluation after their final rotation in Canada. A total of 12 trainees completed the first 2 program cycles. All trainees considered the program as a relevant training to their practice and felt it will change their practice. They reported the program to be effective, with excellent complexity of content. Despite its current success, the program faces challenges in the development of the new subspecialty and ensuring its acceptance among other health care providers and decision makers.

We surveyed nephrology program directors using a web-based survey in order to define current clinical and educational practice patterns and identify areas for improvement.

Our survey explored fellowship program demographics, fellows’ workload, call structure, and education. Program directors were asked to estimate the average and maximum number of patients on each of their inpatient services, the number of patients seen by fellows in clinic, and to provide details regarding their overnight and weekend call. In addition, we asked about number of and composition of didactic conferences. The average number of fellows per program was approximately seven.

Critical thinking CT is considered to be foundational for the development of RN clinical reasoning. Reflective journaling has been used as an educational strategy to support the development of CT. This project’s purpose was to explore how using reflective journaling about CT dispositions with RNs in a fellowship program might influence RN’s use of CT dispositions. This descriptive, qualitative study used content analysis as the method to analyze journal entries focused on seven CT dispositions: inquisitiveness, systematicity, open mindedness, analyticity, truth seeking, CT maturity, and CT confidence written by RNs in the first 7 weeks of their fellowship program.

The purposeful use of CT dispositions as described in the journal entries also helped to guide the RN’s individual learning. J Contin Educ Nurs. Researchers have found that gender differences in the career advancement are shaped by gender-biased evaluations derived from gender stereotypes. Other studies demonstrate the positive impacts of mentoring and gender homophily in the mentoring dyads.

To add greater insights to the current findings of female academic scientists’ career disadvantages, this dissertation investigates comprehensive effects of gender, mentoring, and gender homophily in the mentoring dyads on female scientists’ career advancement outcomes in academic science. Based on the Status Characteristics Theory, the concept of mentoring, Social Capital Theory, and Ingroup Bias Theory, causal path models are developed to test direct and indirect effects of gender, mentoring resources, and gender homophily on STEM faculty’s career advancement.

The research models were tested using structural equation modeling SEM with data collected from a national survey, funded by the National Science Foundation, completed in by tenured and tenure-track academic STEM faculty from higher education institutions in the United States.

Findings suggest that there is no gender difference in career advancement controlling for mentoring resources and gender homophily in the mentoring dyads and other factors including research productivity and domestic caregiving responsibilities. In two studies, we looked for the electrophysiological correlates of outcome comparison. Subjects chose one of two boxes shown on the screen, each box contained a gain or a loss. The alternative outcome was always revealed first, followed by the received outcome. In half of the trials the software picked one box instead of subjects. We tested whether the feedback-related negativity FRN and the P3 elicited by the received reflect outcome comparison.

As expected , we found that the FRN and P3 were more positive when the received outcome was a gain vs. The FRN and P3 were also sensitive to the value of the alternative outcome , but contrary to our predictions, they were more positive when the alternative outcome was a gain vs.

As the FRN and P3 are sensitive to expectations , we hypothesized that our findings might result from subjects’ biased expectations : subjects might have wrongly believed that a good bad alternative outcome signaled a bad good received outcome. The objectives of this study were to investigate why VDPs’ in England and Wales perceive they chose dentistry as a professional career ; how they perceive their vision has changed and the implications for their professional career plans, both short- and longterm. Purposive sampling of schemes was undertaken to include urban, rural and metropolitan schemes, schemes in areas with and without dental schools and geographic coverage across England and Wales.

All VDPs in these schemes were initiated to participate in this qualitative study using focus groups. A topic guide was utilised to standardise data collection. Informants’ views were recorded on tape and in field notes. Data were transcribed and analysed using Framework Methodology.

A total of 99 VDPs participated in the 10 focus groups. Their choice of dentistry as a professional career was motivated by multiple categories of influence: ‘academic’, ‘healthcare’, ‘lifestyle’, the influence of ‘family’, ‘friends’, ‘ careers advice’ and ‘work experience’.

Consideration of the features of the ‘professional job’ appears to have been key to their choice of dentistry and the ‘active rejection of medicine’ as an alternative career. Much cognitive and social cognitive research suggests that exposure to information may have unconscious influences on thinking and behavior. The present study assessed the impact of information statements on the accessibility of alcohol outcome expectancies. The 2 studies reported here investigated the effects of exposure to alcohol statements typical of informational approaches to prevention on the accessibility of alcohol outcome expectancies.

High school and university students were presented with information statements about the effects of alcohol and other commercial products. This study explores Australian intern pharmacists’ perceived preparedness for practice, the match between their expectations and experience to meet the requirements of health professionals in Australia’s health care reforms, and their future career intentions. Methods: Two questionnaires were sent by post to all intern pharmacists in South Australia; one was sent early in their internship and the second follow-up questionnaire was sent near the completion of their internship.

Personal and professional characteristics of men and women hospital pharmacy residents were studied to identify differences that could affect future hospital pharmacy practice. Residents in ASHP-accredited pharmacy residency programs received a survey containing questions on demographic information, reasons for selecting a residency, areas of professional interest, postresidency career goals, responsibilities to home and family, and advantages and disadvantages associated with gender.

Of residents receiving questionnaires, responded; the percentages of men and women responding corresponded to the ratio of men and women in hospital pharmacy residencies. While men and women expressed educational goals that were not significantly different, more men than women had earned or were in the process of earning advanced degrees.

The majority of residents did not think their gender affected them in their residency programs, but in professional interactions more men saw gender as an advantage and more women as a disadvantage.

Significantly more than women aspired to be hospital pharmacy directors. The results suggest that men are obtaining advanced training closer to the time they graduate from pharmacy school and that in the future women competing for promotions may be older than men competing for comparable positions.

We then propose that perceived career opportunity within the organization moderates the relationship between organizational support for development and employee performance and turnover. Using a sample of exempt-level employees and their supervisors, we found that participation in training classes, leader-member exchange, and career mentoring were each positively related to employees’ perceptions of organizational support for development.

We also found support for the moderator hypotheses. Specifically, development support positively related to job performance, but only when perceived career opportunity within the organization was high. Further, development support was associated with reduced voluntary turnover when perceived career opportunity was high, but it was associated with increased turnover when perceived career opportunity was low.

Our study demonstrates that social exchange and career motivation theory work together to explain when and how employees’ perceptions of organizational support for development relate to turnover and job performance.

Using a web-based recruitment and data collection procedure, adults who had used both synthetic cannabinoids and botanical marijuana and adults who had used botanical marijuana but not synthetic cannabinoids, completed measures of outcome expectancies and other relevant questionnaires. A significant interaction revealed that participants who had used both synthetic cannabinoids and botanical marijuana indicated lower agreement with positive expectancies for synthetic cannabinoids, and higher agreement with positive expectancies for botanical marijuana, than did those participants who used only botanical marijuana.

There was no interaction between type of drug and use history on agreement with negative expectancies , and participants agreed more strongly with negative outcome expectancies for synthetic cannabinoids than for botanical marijuana whether they had used one or both types of these drugs. The most frequently provided reasons for using synthetic cannabinoids included availability, perceived legality, cost, curiosity, and social interaction.

Given growing public acceptance of recreational and medical marijuana, coupled with negative perceptions and increasing regulation of synthetic cannabinoid compounds, botanical marijuana is likely to remain more available and more popular than synthetic cannabinoids.
