However, Liberals did win re-election in September ; subsequently, in February , the Liberal Government started studying the implementation of Family Day. Nationally, the third Monday in February has sometimes been celebrated as Heritage Day. Each year, Heritage Canada chooses a different theme for the Heritage Day celebrations.
Several attempts have been made since to try and make Heritage Day a statutory holiday, but to no avail. Louis Riel Day is recognized as a statutory holiday or “general holiday” in Manitoba by law; as such, most employees in the province either have this day off with pay, or are paid differently if they do work. This day, however, is not a recognized holiday.
In February , it was reported that the Manitoba government was considering a February holiday. The provincial government of Prince Edward Island introduced Islander Day in , due to the rising trend of a holiday in February. It was first held on the second Monday of February in , rather than the third Monday, as in other provinces. This incongruity effected much controversy, as businesses suffered as a result of being out of sync with their partners in other provinces, as well as the United States, which celebrates Presidents Day on the third Monday of February.
After the provincial Liberal Party was elected in , its leader Stephen McNeil said that he planned to create a February statutory holiday in Nova Scotia. Governments in the remaining jurisdictions without February holidays have come under some pressure to harmonize.

Other provinces have holidays in February on the same day but these holidays aren’t called family day. In Nova Scotia this day is called Heritage Day. Since this is not a federally established holiday all federal workers work on Family day including post office employees and public servants. It’s interesting how public servants don’t complain about this in the comments area the same way private sector workers complain about having to work on Easter Monday when public servants have the day off.
Family Day was originally created to give people time to spend with their families but it also provides a day off between New Years Day and Good Friday as they are approximately three months apart. As mentioned above, unfortunately, not everyone gets Family Day off, which makes it a debatable holiday in many provinces.
Why can’t the whole country simple agree on 9 or 10 common statutory holidays remains a mystery and a good indicator of just how overcomplicated our laws are. Any one who believes any holiday is a ‘waist’ of time needs to learn the english language. Which in itself can be a ‘waste’ of time. On this day I actually usually have a biiiiiiiiiiiig bowl of uhhhhhh Reese for breakfast cereal. Then I tend to my action figures collection and paint any touch ups the dolls I MEAN action mans, whatever paint ups they need.
If banks are closed then why not the post office and other government offices? Doesn’t seem right, just my personal opinion. Huge difference. But you would think that people who are in the private sector, unemployed, self-employed etc would WANT their family members and friends who are public servants to get Easter Monday off to spend together, be able to go on a holiday etc.
I know that when I worked over Christmas, it put off many family plans, and even if I was fine working, many people I cared for were upset. It isn’t all just tit for tat. As a self-employed worker, I usually work all holidays and long weekends. Great time to catch up on paperwork, contracts etc, when clients are away from the office.
And I don’t get paid holiday pay, overtime, get any benefits etc. I don’t spend all my time wanting the private sector not to have holidays.
