We will spend the day exploring the Park with its many features with short walks and hikes. Then head out later in the day to Mount Robson, the highest peak in the Rockies.
Today is a good day for picnics, if the weather cooperates! How we spend it will be determined by the weather and your inclination, but there is lots to see! And a very cool fact is that Olympians come to Whistler to train at Whistler Olympic Park because of its long season. Each year, Whistler buries snow in the spring and stores it over the summer so that they can spread it out and start skiing early in the fall as soon as the temperature falls.
Whistler Olympic Park also has snowshoeing trails where you can enjoy a day outdoors. You can even take guided tours and lessons. What we love about snowshoeing is that you can do it yourself. There are so many hiking trails around Whistler that you can strap on a pair of snowshoes and head out on the trail to do some exploring.
Nothing says winter more than taking a sleigh ride with Clydesdale horses. A shuttle bus will pick you up and take you to the Fairmont Chalet where hot chocolate or hot apple cider is waiting for you by a campfire. There are some amazing bars and restaurants in Whistler, but one of the most unique experiences for us was to go into the Belvedere Iceroom at the Bearfoot Bistro. Here was donned Canada Goose Parkas and stepped into the coldest tasting room in the world.
We continued to taste shots of vodka from around the world served in ice-cold shot glasses sitting on a frozen ice sculpted table. Going to the Ice Cave is one of the most unique things to do in Whistler.
Located in the heart of Whistler Village, the Audain Centre is a wonderful cultural experience. Set in a wooded backdrop, the entrance is in a serene setting that sets the tone to browse art. There are permanent and rotating exhibits. The most fascinating to us was the First Nations Art exhibits.
If you want to try one of the most quintessential things to do in Whistler, try backcountry skiing. Whistler offers backcountry courses that teach you how to read the conditions, use your emergency beacon, dig someone out of an avalanche and enjoy unforgettable powder skiing.
If you want to try backcountry skiing, join a tour that introduces you to everything you need to know. So be sure to walk around the experience it in full. There is plenty of shopping in the village and a lot of hiking trails in the summer and snowshoe trails in the winter.
If you want to go cycling from the village, hop on the Valley Trail. This network of trails is 45 km long and passes through viewpoints and other neighborhoods in Whistler. The Whistler Mountain Bike Park is one of the best mountain biking parks in the world and it is beginner-friendly too! We love them! A Via Ferrata is an adventure along ladders and bridges made of metal rungs clinging to the side of a mountain. From the parking lot for the gondola, you can see the beautiful Stawamus Chief — a massive granite dome that is over metres high.
Our adventure, however, took us up the gondola — complete with full glass walls and ceiling! Leslie got us off the bus and went to gather our tickets, then distributed them. He actually came up the mountain with us to make sure everything was taken care of. We then had some time at the top to explore. The gondola ride itself took about 10 minutes and it was honestly incredible. Watching the landscape change as you get higher and higher is something we will not forget — we even had a gondola just to ourselves.
We had a time that we needed to be back down at the bus — but had enough time for a short hiking loop and a sit down in the sun. The top attraction up there is the suspension bridge which takes you from the chalet building to another small observation point on a nearby cliffside. Overall, everything up there is very family-friendly. We then continued on and this time we went all the way from Squamish to Whistler.
This was the longest part of the drive — but we did make a short stop just off the highway at the Tantalus Lookout to catch a glimpse of Tantalus mountain in the distance.
Once in Whistler, our driver actually drove us around both villages — Whistler and Blackcomb — to orient ourselves before letting us off in the bus parking area at Whistle Village. At this point, we had three hours to explore. Usually, you would have enough time to take the Whistler Village Gondola, take the PeakPeak Gondola across to Blackcomb Mountain, and back down the Blackcomb Gondola all on one ticket.
Eric has been on the PeakPeak Gondola before but we will be back so Lisa can experience it, too! So, we ended up just taking our time in the Villages by walking about, shopping, and getting something to eat.
Afterwards, we found a nature trail and crossed the Covered Bridge over Fitzsimmons Creek. Before walking back to the bus, we also had coffees at Moguls Coffee House which were pretty good — the giant cookie made things even better! At the designated time, we headed for the bus park and reconnected with Leslie. We then headed back down the highway. Sitting down on the bus was nice after lots of walking.
So, off we went down a well-travelled side road. We ended up seeing 5 or 6 black bears from the bus which was very cool. Shortly thereafter, we arrived at Alexander Falls viewpoint where we had a few minutes to check it out.
This final road was a little bumpier but Leslie drove it like a pro. We continued down the highway towards Vancouver with a drive through Squamish to check out where the bald eagles hang out at Brackendale Eagles Provincial Park seen from across the Squamish River from the bus. As the day was getting late — and with Vancouver coming back into view in the distance — we made one final stop at Porteau Cove to stretch our legs, see Howe Sound, use the washroom, and even see marine animals a seal.
Back on the bus again one last time, we headed for the city! There was quite a bit of traffic close to the Lions Gate Bridge but otherwise it was smooth sailing!
With the tour done and just the drop-offs to do, our numbers dwindled as people were returned to their drop-off points. Overall we would recommend this tour. We really liked the Sea-to-Sky gondola. The tour provided us with a perfect little sampler of possibilities so we will definitely be back! Here are some of the things we had on us for the day trip:.
